Free radicals are essential for the survival of a cell. Antioxidants control the overproduction of free radicals and maintain homeostasis. The knowledge of free radicals and synthetic antioxidants is crucial for the drug discovery process.
This book describes the recent work on heterocyclic antioxidant agents. It provides an introduction to free radicals and their role in different diseases. The role of free radicals in Parkinson’s and diabetes are discussed in detail given the increasing prevalence of these diseases. Though several naturally occurring antioxidants are available, they lack drug-likeness properties. To overcome these issues, researchers are exploring synthetic agents which can effectively scavenge free radicals. Organic compounds (cyclic) bearing nitrogen, oxygen, and sulfur atoms display promising free radical scavenging ability. Here in this book antioxidant ability of these compounds is discussed comprehensively.
